2. How does the compass work?
The Earth works like a huge magnet. The
Earth's core consists of molten steel. Because
of the rotation of the earth, electron flows are
generated in this molten core. This compound
creates a huge magnetic and thus a North and
South pole.
Tiny, moveable steel particles, like the magne-
tic compass needle, direct themselves towards
the poles of the Earth. The magnetic poles can
change their positions and therefore don't
always coincide exactly with the geographical
