Features
The Surveyor RI Plus Detector is a full-featured, low-maintenance, refractive index detector.
The detector is a bench-top unit for inclusion in the Surveyor Plus LC system. You control the
detector through an Ethernet link to the ChromQuest data system computer.
The Surveyor RI Plus Detector has the following features:
An automatic intensity adjustment that compensates for the deterioration in sensitivity
due to flowcell contamination or reduced light levels
•A low volume (8μL) flowcell, which reduces band broadening
A solenoid valve that operates at half its rated voltage and a tungsten lamp that operates at
a reduced voltage to maximize component life
LEDs (light emitting diodes) that keep you informed of power, communications, run,
and temperature status
A dynamic operating range of 1.00 to 1.75 RIU, which makes the detector suitable for a
variety of applications
Integrated instrument control from the ChromQuest data system, which provides
automated temperature control, a rise time filter, a purge function, an autozero function,
and built-in calibration procedures
Front Panel
The front panel of the Surveyor RI Plus Detector provides access to the flowcell connections.
Liquid enters the flowcell through the IN port and exits the flowcell through the OUT port.
The accessory kit for the Surveyor RI Plus Detector contains the following tubing
connections for the IN and OUT ports:
The connection to the IN port consists of two stainless steel high-pressure fittings and
approximately 27 inches (69 cm) of 0.005-in ID ×1/16 in. OD stainless steel tubing.
The connection for the OUT port consists of a five foot length of 0.060 in. ID ×1/16 in.
OD, Teflon tubing that has a piece of stainless steel tubing with a high-pressure fitting
inserted into one end.

You control the Surveyor RI Plus Detector, as well as the other modules of the Surveyor Plus
LC system, from the ChromQuest chromatography data system.
The ChromQuest user interface has two windows: Main Menu and Instrument. You
administrate and configure the instrument in the Main Menu window. You control the
instrument and process data in the Instrument window.
Figure 4 shows the Main Menu window, the first screen that appears when you launch
ChromQuest from the desktop. Right-clicking the icon for an instrument opens a shortcut
menu with access to the Configuration dialog box. Double-clicking the icon for an
instrument opens the online Instrument window, where you set up methods, create
sequences, and acquire and process data.
To create methods, sequence, and advanced reports during data acquisition, open the offline
Instrument window by choosing Open Offline from the Instrument shortcut menu.

Theory of Operation
The Surveyor RI Plus Detector consists of a high-quality optical system and a flowcell. This
section contains the following topics:
Optical System
Flowcell
Optical System
The optical design of the Surveyor RI Plus Detector is based on Snell’s Law of Refraction,
which uses a prism flowcell. The detector has a flowcell with two compartments that (the
sample and reference) form a pair of liquid prisms.
A beam of light is directed through the flowcell. As the light passes through the reference and
sample compartments of the flowcell, it is deflected. This deflection is proportional to the
difference in the refractive indices of the reference and sample solvents. The detector converts
the deflection detected by a photodiode into an output signal that it sends to the data system.
ChromQuest converts the output signal from the detector and displays the result in the
dimensionless units of RI. Figure 5 contains a representation of this process and Table 3 lists
the components involved in this process.

Figure 6 shows a schematic of the optical system. The numbered components shown in
Figure 6 are described in Table 4.
Figure 6. Optical system components
The condensing lens (item 2) and slit no.1 (item 3) form an image of the tungsten filament
(item 1). This image passes through the collimator lens (item 4) and slit no.2 (item 5), which
project the image of slit no. 2 through the flowcell (item 6) and onto the photodiode (item 9).

When there is a difference in the refractive indices of the sample and reference solvents in the
flowcell, the image on the photodiode moves horizontally as illustrated in Figure 7.
Figure 7. Movement of the image on the photodiode
The electrical signals emitted respectively from the diodes A and B change in proportion to
the movement of the image. A signal corresponding to the difference in refractive index can be
obtained from the difference between the two signal outputs.
Flowcell
The flowcell consists of a reference compartment and a sample compartment. During normal
operation, the reference compartment is shut off from the solvent path. You can replace the
solvent in the reference compartment by using the purge control feature provided in the
ChromQuest data system.
Figure 8 shows a block diagram of the flowcell:
•When the Purge Control is On, solvent flows through both the sample and the reference
compartments of the flowcell.
•When the Purge Control is Off, the reference compartment of the flowcell is shut off
from the solvent path.
