GUIDE TO INSTALLATION
The following can be used as a checklist to verify all of the steps necessary for
complete installation of the STAR-Box™.
1) Read all information in the section "Safety Precautions" at the beginning of this
manual.
2) Correctly position and mount the STAR-Box™ within the reach of the
STARGATE™ cable, according to the information in paragraph 2.3.
3) Provide correct system cabling according to the signals necessary for your
application and RS485 settings (see all sub-paragraphs under 2.4).
4) Set all jumpers according to the specific STAR-Box™ configuration (see all sub-
paragraphs under 2.5 or 2.6).
The installation is now complete.

1 GENERAL FEATURES
1.1 DESCRIPTION
The STAR-Box™ is a STAR-SYSTEM™ accessory used as a connection box
between STARGATE™ devices and the Host PC. It provides the following
advantages:
Facilitate system wiring connections by using spring clamp connectors instead of
having to crimp cable connectors.
Assure RS485 bus integrity in the event of a problem with a device on the line.
Provide surge protection.
Perform RS485 to RS232 conversion for connecting the RS485 network to an
RS232 port on a Host PC (active models only).
Operate as an RS485 line repeater for increasing signal power in long or
complex network applications (active models only).
The STARGATE™ base station is connected to the STAR-Box™ through a standard
RS485 bus cable with connector placed on the left side of the housing.
The STAR-Box™ mechanical dimensions are 167 x 115 x 40 mm (6.57 x 4.53 x 1.57
in.). It weighs about 260 g. (9.3 oz).

2.2 OPENING THE DEVICE
To install the STAR-Box™ it is necessary to open it by unscrewing the four cover
screws shown in Figure A.
CAUTION
The STAR-Box™ must be disconnected from the power supply
during this operation.
The following operations must be performed:
1. Mount the STAR-Box™ to a wall or panel.
2. Proceed with the cable connections (see paragraph 2.4.3).
3. Set the following selection jumpers:
Host/STARGATE™ connection jumpers
Network Termination
Converter/Repeater mode (active models only)
Communication parameters (active models only)

INSTALLATION

2
STAR-Box™ can be installed by physically mounting it to a wall or panel using either
the adhesive strips or screws and dowels provided. The two screw holes inside the
housing of the STAR-Box™ are for mechanical fixture (Figure 3).
To mount the STAR-Box™ using the screws and dowels:
1) Open the STAR-Box™ by unscrewing the 4 cover screws. If necessary, using
the two mounting holes inside the device as a pattern, mark the panel with an
appropriate object and then drill two holes in the panel.
2) Align the STAR-Box™ and insert two screws and screw them into the panel until
tight (see Figure 3).
Figure 3 - Mounting STAR-Box™
After making system cabling and jumper settings (see sub-paragraphs under 2.4),
connect the Host/STARGATE™ to the RJ45 connector on the left side of the STAR-
Box™ housing.
After system functioning has been verified, close the STAR-Box™ using the 4 cover
screws making sure the rubber seal is fitted correctly between the parts of the
housing.

2.4 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
The following STAR-Box™ typical layouts are shown. The RS485 cables in the
figures are shielded with 2 twisted-pairs (i.e. Belden 9842).

*The signals on S1 are repeated on S2 to facilitate network connections. In this way the network
bus can enter and exit the STAR-Box™ from different spring clamps but be physically
connected together.
NOTE
The Shield should be connected to the earth ground in one point
only.
2.4.2 Power Supply
The various system layouts on the previous pages show the system powered by one
power supply which propagates power from one device to all the others in the
network. The power supply should be positioned in the middle of the network for the
best distribution and therfore functioning.
The total number of devices which can be connected to a single power supply
depends on the power supply voltage used and voltage drop across the various
network branches. The following example gives an indication.
INSTALLATION

2
Example: The values in the table refer to a system composed of 1 active STAR-
Box™ and N passive STAR-Boxes™ with their STARGATE™ base
stations. All cable branches are 50 m. long.
Supply Voltage Consumption Number of Devices (N)
12 V 350 mA 4
24 V 550 mA 8
30 V 650 mA 10
Alternatively, a system can adopt multiple power supply solutions. In this way,
STARGATE™ units can be powered separately from the STAR-Box™ network. See
par. 2.5.1 for jumper settings.
Power is supplied to the STAR-Box™ through the pins provided on the spring clamp
connector.

Pin 11 is electrically connected to pins 3 and 8, just as pin 12 is
electrically connected to pins 4 and 9 to allow power propagation
throughout the entire network. Pin 13 is electrically connected to pins
5 and 10 to allow the Shield to protect all network branches. The
Shield should be connected to earth ground in one point only.
The power supply must be between 9 and 30 Vdc only.

2.4.4 System Wiring
The connection and wiring procedure for STAR-Box™ is described as follows:
1) Open the STAR-Box™ as described in paragraph 2.2.
2) Unscrew the compression connectors and pass all the system cables
through them into the STAR-Box™ housing.
3) To connect the power and input/output signals:
Prepare the individual wires of the system cables by stripping the
insulation back approximately 1 cm.
Using a device such as a screwdriver, push down on the lever directly
next to the clamp (see Figure 10).
Insert the wire into the clamp and release the lever.
The wire will now be held in the spring clamp.
