15) Lightning — For added protection for this product during a

lightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for long

periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the

antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to the product

due to lightning and power-line surges.

16) Power Lines — An outside antenna system should not be

located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light

or power circuits, or where it can fall into such power lines or circuits.

When installing an outside antenna system, extreme care should be

taken to keep from touching such power lines or circuits as contact

with them might be fatal.

17) Overloading — Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords, or

integral convenience receptacles as this can result in risk of fire or

electric shock.

18) Object and Liquid Entry — Never push objects of any kind into

this product through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage

points or short-out parts that could result in a fire or electric shock.

Never spill liquid of any kind on the product.

19) Servicing — Do not attempt to service this product yourself as

opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage

or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

20) Damage Requiring Service — Unplug this product from the

wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under

the following conditions:

a) when the power-supply cord or plug is damaged.

b) if liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the product.

c) if the product has been exposed to rain or water.

d) if the product does not operate normally by following the

operating instructions. Adjust only those controls that are covered by

the operating instructions as an improper adjustment of other

controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work

by a qualified technician to restore the product to its normal

operation.

21) Replacement Parts — When replacement parts are required,

this product, ask the service technician to perform safety checks to

such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other products (including

amplifiers) that produce heat.

10) Ventilation — Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for

ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of the product and to

protect it from overheating, and these openings must not be blocked

or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the

product on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface. This product

should not be placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or

rack unless proper ventilation is provided or the manufacturer’s

instructions have been adhered to.

11) Power Sources — This product should be operated only from

the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are

not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your

product dealer or local power company. For products intended to

operate from battery power, or other sources, refer to the operating

instructions.

12) Grounding or Polarization — This product may be equipped

with a polarized alternating-current line plug (a plug having one

blade wider than the other).This plug will fit into the power outlet only

one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug

fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail

to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not

defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.

13) Power-Cord Protection — Power-supply cords should be

routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items

placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at

plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from

the product.

14) Outdoor Antenna Grounding — If an outside antenna or

cable system is connected to the product, be sure the antenna or

cable system is grounded so as to provide some protection against

voltage surges and built-up static charges. Article 810 of the

National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, provides information with

regard to proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure,

grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of

grounding conductors, location of antenna-discharge unit,

connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the

grounding electrode.

Before Use

… Place the amplifier on a hard, flat

surface.

… The ventilation holes should not be

covered. Make sure there is at least 20

cm (8 inches) of space above and at

least 5 cm (2 inches) of space beside the

amplifier. Do not place a CD player or

other equipment on top of the amplifier.

… Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or

close to a source of heat. Also avoid

locations subject to vibrations and

excessive dust, heat, cold or moisture.

… Do not open the cabinet, as this might

result in circuitry damage or electrical

shock.

… Do not attempt to clean the unit with

chemical solvents as this might damage

the finish. Use a clean, dry cloth.

∑How to connect

(1) Twist the wires tightly together so that

they are not straggly.

(2) Turn the terminal cap counterclockwise

to loosen it.

The speaker terminal caps cannot be

fully removed from the base.

(3) Insert the wire into the terminal fully and

turn the terminal cap clockwise to

securely connect it.

(4) Make sure it is fastened firm by pulling

the cord lightly.

Read This Before Operating

Notes on power sources

Caution:

To avoid damaging the speakers by inputing

a sudden high-level signal, be sure to

switch the power off before connecting the

speakers.

∑Before connecting

… Check the impedance of your speakers.

Connect speaker with an impedance of 8

to 16 ohms.

The amplifier's red speaker terminals

are the

≠ (positive) terminals and the

black terminals are the

– (negative)

terminals.

… The ≠ side of the speaker cable is

marked to make it distinguishable from

the

– side of the cable. Connect this

marked side to the red

≠ terminal and

the unmarked side to the black terminal.

… Prepare the speaker cords for

connection by stripping off

approximately 10 mm or less (no more as

this could cause a short-circuit) of the

outer insulation.

IMPORTANT (for U.K. Customers)

DO NOT cut off the mains plug from this

equipment.

If the plug fitted is not

suitable for the power points in your

home or the cable is too short to reach

a power point, then obtain an

appropriate safety approved extension

lead or consult your dealer.

If nonetheless the mains plug is cut off,

remove the fuse and dispose of the plug

immediately, to avoid a possible shock

hazard by inadvertent connection to the

mains supply.

If this product is not provided with a

mains plug, or one has to be fitted,

then

follow the instructions given below:

IMPORTANT. DO NOT make any

connection to the larger terminal which

is marked with the letter E or by the

safety earth symbol

The wires in the mains lead on this

product are coloured in accordance

with the following code:

BLUE: NEUTRAL

BROWN: LIVE

As these colours may not correspond

with the coloured markings identifying

the terminals in your plug proceed as

follows:

The wire which is coloured BLUE must

be connected to the terminal which is

marked with the letter N or coloured

BLACK.

The wire which is coloured BROWN

must be connected to the terminal

which is marked with the letter L or

coloured RED.

When replacing the fuse only a

correctly rated approved type should

be used and be sure to re-fit the fuse

cover.

IF IN DOUBT — CONSULT A

COMPETENT ELECTRICIAN.

Press the lever, insert the stripped and

twisted end (approx. 10 mm) of the cord,

then release the lever so that the cord is

held securely.

Before operating the unit, check that the

operating voltage of the unit is identical to

your local power supply. The operating

voltage is indicated on the nameplate on

the rear panel of the unit.

making connections.

Rear Panel Overview

1AUDIO signal jacks

O TUNER input jacks

Connect the output (LINE OUT) jacks of

the tuner (T-H500) to these jacks.

O MD/TAPE (REC/PLAY) jacks

These jacks are used for the connection

of an MD deck or tape deck.

Connect the output (LINE OUT) jacks of

the MD deck or tape deck to the PLAY

jacks, and the input (LINE IN) jacks of

the MD deck or tape deck to the REC

jacks.

O AUX input jacks

These jacks accept an auxiliary source

such as an LD player or an additional

tape deck.

OLD/CD input jacks

Connect the output (LINE OUT) jacks of

the CD player (PD-H500) to these jacks.

O VCR OUT/IN jacks

Connect the output (AUDIO OUT) jacks

of the video deck to the IN jacks, and the

input (AUDIO IN) jacks of the video deck

to the OUT jacks

Note:

Make sure that you connect the white

pin-plug to the white jacks (left) and the

red pin-plug to the red jacks (right).

2SUB WOOFER OUT jack

Connect the SUB WOOFER OUT jack to a

dedicated amplifier for better reproduction

of the low-frequency region.

3VIDEO signal jacks

Connect the MONITOR OUT jack to the TV

set. Connect the IN and OUT jacks to a VCR,

LD or other component system.

4MD/TAPE selector switch

Set to either MD or TAPE when you connect

a source unit to the MD/TAPE jacks.

5REMOTE CONTROL jacks

These jacks are used for the connection of

the TEAC Mini component system (T-H500,

R-H500, PD-H500) for the purpose of

operating it using the Remote Control unit

(RC-646 provided with the amplifier) or

system control signals.

6Speaker terminals (see page 3.)

7AC power cord

Plug the AC power cord into an AC wall

socket.

8Main power switch

Press the ON side of this rocker (seesaw)

switch to turn the power ON (standby

position); press the OFF side to turn the

power off.

Note:

Leave the main power switch ON at all

times.

Front Panel Controls and Their Functions

1power standby/on button &

indicator

When the main power switch on the side

panel is ON:

Press this button to turn the power on, and

the whole system connected by remote

control connection cables is turned on.

Press it again to turn the system off (power

standby mode).

Notes:

O This indicator lights up in power standby

mode and goes out when this unit is

turned on.

O The system cannot be turned on when

the main power switch on the side panel

is OFF.

2remote sensor

This sensor receives the signal from the

remote control transmitter.

3Surround off/on button &

surround mode button

When the surround mode is turned on by

pressing the off/on button, the desired

surround mode can be selected by pressing

this button.

4Tone (bass/treble) controls

These two tone controls – bass and treble –

can be used to obtain a "flat" frequency

response or a tone which suits your

individual listening preference. The bass

control adjusts low frequencies and the

treble control adjusts the high frequencies.

5center mode button

Set to the center mode, when you select

ä Pro Logic or ∂ 3

Stereo mode.

6master volume control

This control is used for adjusting the signal

output level to the speakers.

7Display window

8balance control

This control is used for adjusting the

balance of the volume level between the

left and right channels.

9test tone button

With this button, you can listen to a test

tone from the front, rear and center

speakers in

ä Pro Logic or

∂ 3 STEREO mode.

0rear/center/delay time button &

level (up/down) control

Each time you press the rear/center/delay

time button, the selected mode will be

displayed.

Adjust the desired rear level, center level,

delay time by using the rear/center /delay

time button and level (up/down) control.

Rotate this selector to select the desired

input (tuner, MD/tape, LD/CD, aux, VCR)

wphones jack

Connect the headphone plug to this jack,

and sound to the speakers will be cut off.

Note:

Decrease the volume level to minimum

(∞ position) before connecting head-

Remote Control Operation

When operating the remote control unit,

point it towards the remote sensor on the

front panel of the unit.

1sleep button

This button is used for engaging the sleep

timer in the tuner.

2power standby buttons

on: Press to turn the system on.

standby: Press to set the system to standby

mode.

3Indicator

This indicator will blink when a remote

control signal is transmitted by pressing a

button.

Note:

The indicator has two colors:

One is green in the CD mode; the other is

red in other mode.

These buttons are used for selecting the

preset channel in tuner mode, or the track

number in CD mode.

OUsing the input selector buttons, select

CD or tuner before operating the numeric

buttons.

When entering a single-digit number, enter

0 for the 10's digit followed by the desired

1's digit.

When entering a double-digit number, first

enter the 10's digit then the 1's digit.

For example:

To enter 15:

(1) Press "1", and "1" starts blinking.

(2) While it is blinking, press "5".

1. Remove the battery compartment

cover.

2. Insert two “AAA” (R03, UM-4) dry

batteries.

Make sure that the batteries are

inserted with their positive

± and

negative

— poles positioned correctly.

3. Close the cover until it clicks.

Battery Replacement.

If you notice that the distance between

the remote control unit and the player for

correct operation becomes shorter, it

indicates that the batteries are exhaus-

ted. In this case replace the batteries with

new ones.

Precautions concerning batteries

… Be sure to insert the batteries with

correct positive

± and negative —

polarities.

… Use batteries of the same type. Never

use different types of batteries

together.

… Rechargeable and non-rechargeable

batteries can be used. Refer to the

precautions on their labels.

… When the remote control unit is not to

be used for a long time (more than a

month), remove the batteries from the

remote control unit to prevent them

from leaking. If they leak, wipe away

the liquid inside the battery

compartment and replace the batteries

with new ones.

… Do not heat or disassemble batteries

and never dispose of old batteries by

throwing them in a fire.

Operations

1 Set the volume control to the ∞ position

before beginning.

2 power

Turn the system on by pressing the

power button.

3 Select the source you want to listen to

by rotating the input selector knob.

4 Operate the source unit to be played.

(Refer to the operating instructions of

each unit.)

5 Adjust the volume level.

1. When you turn on the system, the source

unit that has been selected by the input

selector will start playing automatically.

This AI direct play function allows you to

restart operation using the source unit

(tape deck, CD player or tuner) when

power was last turned off.

For example:

(1) When the system is switched off with

the input selector set to the CD position

and a disc loaded in the CD player,

T (2)

the next time you switch the power on,

T (3) the CD player will start playing

automatically from the first track on the

disc.

2. When you select the desired source by

rotating the input selector, the selected

source unit will start playing

automatically.

For example:

(1) While you are listening to a CD, T (2)

if you select tape 1,

T (3) tape 1 will start

playing and the CD player will pause

automatically.

3. When you play a source unit by pressing

the play button, that source will be

selected automatically by the input

selector.

For example:

(1) While you are listening to a CD, T (2)

if you press the play button (

” or ∏) on

the cassette deck (tape 1, R-H500),

T (3)

the input source will be changed to tape

1 automatically.

Note:

The following buttons work as play buttons

in the tuner (T-H500): the power button, the

band button, the preset call up/down

button, and the numeric buttons (1 - 0).

1 Select a source to be recorded using

the input selector.

2 Play the source.

3 Set the MD deck or the tape deck to

recording mode.

1. Set the input selector to MD/tape (or

VCR).

2. Play deck 1 (or deck 2).

3. Set deck 2 (or deck 1) to recording mode.

Notes:

… When dubbing is attempted using two R-

H500s (or MD decks), be sure not to

connect the remote cable to deck 2. If it

is connected, dubbing is not possible.

… When a second deck such as another R-

H500 is connected to the VCR out

terminal on the amplifier, dubbing from

deck 1 to deck 2 is possible. However,

remote-controlled operation of deck 2 is

not possible. Therefore, do not connect

the remote cable from deck 1 to deck 2.

… When dubbing from deck 1 to deck 2 (or

an MD recorder), set the input selector

to MD/tape, then start deck 2 (or the MD

recorder) for recording and press the

play button on deck 1.

This unit has 7 kinds of the surround modes.

Select the desired mode suitable to the

source and your system.

… HALL (Concert Hall)

It reproduces such a sound of large

scale performance like an orchestra as if

in a concert hall.

… THEATER

You can enjoy the magnificent and vivid

sound as if in the theater.

… LIVE

It is effective especially in giving a

widely expanding feeling to strong music

like a rock concert.

… DISCO

This mode emphasizes unique low

frequency region.

… STADIUM

This mode provides the effect of being in

a wide space.

… ä PRO LOGIC

It is most suitable to the source of

theater (music) which has the mark of

ä.

…∂3 STEREO

In case that you do not use the rear

speaker, you can enjoy the sound of

Dolby Pro Logic.

Dolby Pro Logic produces much vivider

sound, while a conventional surround

system has reproduced a intended

presence of sound.

Because this system is designed to clarify

stable phases of the sound with a unique

technology of signal process emphasizing

the orientation in the production of CD and

LD, you can enjoy the surrounding sound

with orientation and presence at your

home.

… In case of Dolby 3 stereo, surround

speaker is not installed.

There are 3 kinds of the center modes.

Select the desired mode suitable to your

speaker system.

… NORMAL Mode

When a smaller center speaker is used

that is not capable of reproducing bass

signal as well as the left and right

speakers.

… WIDE Mode

When a center speaker is used that is

capable of reproducing bass signals

equivalent to the left and right front

speakers.

… PHANTOM Mode

In case that you do not use a center

speaker.

(In this case, the sound of center

speaker is played out of the front right

and the front left speakers.)

As the unit is designed so that you can set

up the delay according to the source of

sound and the size of place, you can

expand a live and feeling as if in a theater

or a concert hall.

Time Delay

DOLBY 3 STEREO Mode is a useful one for

the customers who can not afford to install

the surround speaker. The mode provides

the effect of sound similar to Dolby Pro

Logic without surround speaker.

Dolby 3 Stereo

Delay Time

In the surround modes, the sound from the

rear speakers should be delayed slightly,

relative to that from the front speakers. The

optimum delay time will be different in

rooms of different sizes and will depend on

acoustic properties, whether the walls and

furnishings reflect or absorb sound, etc. It

is recommended that you try different delay

times to obtain the best effect. The delay is

digitally synthesized, for the highest sound

quality with minimum noise and distortion.

The delay time can be set independently for

each surround mode using up/down

Remplacement des piles

Si vous remarquez que la distance entre la

télécommande et le lecteur devient plus

courte pour un fonctionnement correct,

ceci indique que les piles sont usées. Dans

ce cas, remplacer les piles par des

nouvelles.

Précautions à observer concernant les

piles

… Bien placer les piles en respectant les

polarités plus

± et moins —.

… Utiliser des piles du même type. Ne

jamais utiliser ensemble différents types

de piles.

… Des piles ou des batteries peuvent être

utilisées. Se référer aux précautions à

observer sur leurs étiquettes.

… Si la télécommande n'est pas utilisée

mois), retirer les piles de la

désirée à l’aide du sélecteur d’entrée,

l’appareil choisi se met automatiquement

en marche.

Par exemple:

(1) Pendant que vous êtes en train

d’écouter un CD,

(2) si vous

sélectionnez tape 1 (platine cassette n°

1),

(3) la cassette de la platine n° 1 se

met automatiquement en marche et le

lecteur de CD s’arrête.

3. Si vous sélectionnez un appareil en

de la télécommande du magnétophone 1

Quand une enceinte centrale plus petite

qui n'est pas capable de reproduire les

signaux graves aussi bien que les

enceintes gauche et droite, est utilisée.

… Mode WIDE

Quand une enceinte centrale qui est

capable de reproduire les signaux

graves aussi bien que les enceintes

gauche et droite, est utilisée.

… Mode PHANTOM

Dans cette configuration il n'y a pas

d'enceinte centrale. (Le son provenant

de l'enceinte centrale est transmis par

les haut-parleurs gauche et droit.)

Mode Central

Comme l'appareil est conçu pour que vous

puissiez régler le retard en fonction de la

source sonore et de la taille de la pièce,

vous pouvez étendre l'ampleur et donner

l'impression d'être dans une salle de

spectacle ou de concert.

Mode NORMAL: Le signal central est faible

Le mode Dolby Stéréo 3 canaux est un

mode particulièrement adapté pour ceux

qui n'ont pas la possibilité d'installer les

enceintes d'ambiance. Ce mode permet

d'obtenir des effets sonores semblables à

ceu du mode Dolby Pro Logic sans

enceintes d'ambiance.

Dolby Stéréo 3 canaux

Durée de retard

Dans les modes Surround, le son des haut-

parleurs arrières doit être légèrement

retardé par rapport à celui des haut-

parleurs avant. La durée de retard optimale

sera différente dans des pièces de tailles

différentes et dépendra des propriétés

acoustiques, comme les murs et le mobilier

reflètent ou absorbent le son, etc. Il est

recommandé d'essayer plusieurs durées

de retard pour obtenir le meilleur effet. Le

retard est à synthèse numérique, pour la

plus haute qualité sonore avec du bruit et

des distorsions minimum.

La durée de retard peut être réglée de

façon indépendante pour chaque mode

Surround en utilisant la commande

up/down, avec le réglage courant montré

dans l'affichage.

Le système Dolby Stéréo 3 canaux n'offre

que deux modes de fonctionnement: le

mode NORMAL et le mode WIDE

contrairement au mode Dolby Pro Logic qui

comprend en plus le mode PHANTOM.

Installation des enceintes

… Installez l'enceinte centrale directement

au dessus du téléviseur.

… Utilisez une enceinte blindée

magnétiquement.

1 Appuyez sur la touche surround off/on.

2 Sélectionnez le mode désiré (HALL,

THEATER, LIVE, DISCO, STADIUM) en

appuyant sur la touche de mode

surround.

3 Régler le niveau arrière désiré en

utilisant la touche rear/center/delay

time et la commande de niveau

(up/down).
