What Can the OfficeConnect Gateway do? 1 - 5
What Can the
OfficeConnect
Gateway do?
The 3Com OfficeConnect Gateway family of IADs offers a complete
integrated voice and data solution ideally suited for small businesses. The
product family lets small and midsize businesses maximize the economy
of their DSL broadband Internet connections by transmitting voice and
data across wide area networks (WANs). These products function as
integrated access devices (IADs) that sit at the edge of the business
network.
The OfficeConnect Gateway combines signals from business phone
systems with data from PCs and other computers, and merges them for
transmission to the Internet and to the public switched telephone
network (PSTN). The OfficeConnect Gateway supports voice features
such as call forwarding, caller ID, and three-way calling, plus
data-networking features such as VPN initiation and termination, as well
as encryption and advanced fire wall filtering. In addition, you can add
the 3Com OfficeConnect Gateway Voice Expansion unit to either of the
OfficeConnect Gateway base units so that you can scale to 4,8 or 12
simultaneous voice lines by combining different units.
By integrating voice and data over DSL broadband, the OfficeConnect
Gateway family greatly reduces the costs associated with leasing
multiple telephone lines
The OfficeConnect Gateway Data-only base unit contains a built-in
voice expansion interface so users can choose to add voice capability
whenever their application needs change.
The OfficeConnect Gateway family employs voice-over DSL (VoDSL)
technology, plus ATM QoS (Quality of Service) support with dynamic
bandwidth allocation, to optimize high voice quality.
Easy-to-use Web-based interface and HTML/SNMP/Telnet access
simplify local management and facilitate remote configuration and
management.
Robust VPN support includes tunnel initiation/termination for up to 16
tunnels, plus hardware-supported IPSec processing to speed VPN data
encryption.
Continuous high-speed Internet and remote LAN access are delivered
via the DSL interface and autosensing 10/100 BASE-T-LAN port.
The OfficeConnect Gateway supports full-featured TCP/IP routing,
advanced address translation, and multiple transport protocols,

including PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE), PPP over ATM (PPPoA), and
multi-protocol encapsulation over ATM.
Virtual Private
Networks (VPNs)
The full-featured virtual private networking (VPN) functionality of the
OfficeConnect Gateway gives remote offices and telecommuters secure
access to corporate LANs. VPN support is provided through the initiation
and termination of IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP tunnels. The OfficeConnect
Gateway supports up to 16 simultaneous VPN tunnels. Dedicated
hardware acceleration provides high-performance IPSec tunnels.
VPN technology is based on a tunneling strategy. Tunneling involves
encapsulating packets constructed in a base protocol format within some
other protocol. For VPNs that are run over the Internet, packets in one of
several VPN protocol formats are encapsulated within IP packets.
Voice over DSL VoDSL combines asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) with DSL service to
deliver voice and data services over a single copper line. The different
attributes of DSL technology and ATM functionality work well together.
DSL links are ideally suited for voice and data integration. ATM can
simultaneously carry voice and data traffic.
VoDSL is usually provisioned as an overlay to a DSL broadband access
network. A VoDSL implementation requires several additional
components. A voice gateway resides at the service providers central
office near a PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) telephone switch
(Class 5 Switch) and serves as the bridge between the circuit-based voice
switch and the packet-based DSL network. An IAD, located at each
customer premises, is connected to the DSL circuit. The device manages
voice services via analog POTS ports and Internet service through an
Ethernet port. Existing telephone and LAN equipment interconnect with
the IAD.
The IAD converts LAN and voice data to ATM cells and transmits the data
over the DSL link to the service providers network. The DSLAM
aggregates traffic coming from individual lines; encapsulated voice traffic
is sent to the voice gateway and the data traffic is carried as packet or cell
to its final destination, an ISP or corporate network. The voice gateway
converts the voice traffic to conventional voice signals and sends it to a
Class 5 voice switch.
An example of a typical VoDSL implementation is shown in the following
illustration.

Typical VoDSL Implementation
Small-business VoDSL solution
The 3Com OfficeConnect Gateway delivers multiple toll-quality voice
lines, high-speed Internet, and corporate LAN access cost-effectively to
small businesses. Plus, its easy to add other popular OfficeConnect
solutions to the network, including switches, hubs, firewalls, network
storage servers, wireless access points, and Internet servers. The following
illustration shows an example of a small-business VoDSL implementation.

OfficeConnect Gateway Integration with an NBX system or
traditional PBX/Key system
The OfficeConnect Gateway can easily be integrated with a 3Com NBX
25 Communications system or traditional PBX/Key system. The 3Com
NBX 25 communications systems analog ports are plugged into the four
FXS ports of the OfficeConnect Gateway base unit. By combining these
systems, users have access to toll-quality voice services as well as the
feature-rich call processing function of the NBX system. The
OfficeConnect Gateway works similarly with either a PBX or Key system.
The following illustration shows an implementation to support an NBX
system.
